Prostate cancer is the third most common type of cancer among men in Palestine. The prevalence of prostate cancer increased by 50% between 2000 and 2015. Recognizing the urgency of early detection and public awareness, An-Najah Global Health Institute (GHI) at An-Najah National University launched the “Blue November” campaign, in collaboration with An-Najah Clinics and Palestinian Medical Students’ Association (PMSA). Blue November initiative was implemented between 16 November to 30 November, 2024.
This initiative is part of a broader effort to combat non-communicable diseases by promoting early screening and preventive healthcare measures, reflecting the institute’s commitment to work in the field of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) as one of the most essential matter in global health. The campaign major objective was to educate the public about prostate cancer risks, symptoms, and the importance of early detection, while also providing free prostate cancer screening tests to men over 50.
Free Prostate Cancer Screenings for 1,000 Men
One of the campaign most impactful components was the free screening initiative, where 1,000 men over the age of 50 received screening prostate cancer tests at An-Najah Clinics, situated within the premise of the university. Early detection contributes to improving survival rates and treatment success, which emphasizes the benefits that this service contributed toward better public health outcomes.
Awareness and Education: Engaging the Community
Blue November adopted a multi-faceted awareness strategy to ensure maximum outreach and engagement, aligning with the institute’s work framed as a public health services. The educational components of this initiative was delivered through on-campus awareness booths and social media outreach. Instructors set up information booths across campus, distributing educational pamphlets and encouraging students to spread the word about early detection.
In these booths, instructors and students discussed prostate cancer symptoms, risk factors, diagnostic tests, and treatment options. Given the influence of digital platforms, the campaign also extended its reach using the social media platforms of An-Najah National University to share informative videos about prostate cancer.
The “Blue November” campaign represented an uncommon attempt to raise awareness about cancers in Palestine, especially focusing on prostate cancer as one of the most common cancers among men. It also aimed to create a long-lasting impact on men health awareness through encouraging a culture of adopting proactive health measures, routine check-ups, and breaking the stigma surrounding men health discussions.
