Start SunSmart Campaign
Locations: An-Najah National University and surrounding areas
Timeline: May, 2025
Target population: University students (young adults)
Field: Non-communicable diseases
Start SunSmart, is set to launch in May 2025 in at An-Najah National University. This campaign aims to educate university students on the risks of prolonged sun exposure, skin cancer, and premature aging. More importantly, the campaign focuses on empowering young adults with education and promotion of preventive measures, including sun avoidance during peak hours, seeking shade, and routine sunscreen use.
The design of the campaign is based on a series of studies conducted by the staff of An-Najah Global Health Institute. These studies used various methodologies, including quantitative and qualitative design, to conduct audience analysis, exploring the knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and preferred communication channels of Palestinian young adults. The findings informed the design of the campaign, tailoring the tools and communication to the target population.
The campaign will include interactive educational workshops across university halls, led by trained student instructors under the supervision of public health specialists. The workshops will include a direct didactic approach, interactive discussions, and using apps that depict the chronic solar effects on the skin. Additionally, dermatologists will engage with students through live Q&A sessions on social media, offering expert advice on sun protection.
Students will also receive educational pamphlets and free sunscreen samples in high-traffic areas on campus where information will be provided and awareness banners will be placed. The campaign will also partner with local cafés and restaurants to spread sun safety messages beyond campus. To assess the impact, pre- and post-campaign surveys will be conducted to measure knowledge retention and behavioral change.
